NEW: Discoverability and Conversion Project, launching September 2025
Introduction
Launching in September 2025, the project will agree, document and promote the consistent use of ONIX to enable helpful, efficient product searches and encourage their conversion into sales. Physical and digital products are in scope, as are all readers and all intermediaries in the supply chain.
The project’s recommendations will be aimed at those with an interest in making books and related products more discoverable, visible and tradable, as well as at those who are not aware that their books are not discoverable or easily and reliably tradable. Stakeholders include standards organisations, publishers, data aggregators, distributors, wholesalers, platforms and resellers, physical as well as online retailers and consumers.
The initiative will build on the work of BIC’s recently completed Data Recipient Best Practice, by focusing on the top six product information challenges captured and ranked by BIC’s Metadata Committee members:
- Best Practice Basics
- Metadata Quality Impact
- Richer Metadata
- Sources of Information
- Internet Discoverability
- Too much information
Relevant, accurate and timely product information is key to making products more discoverable and visible to consumers. This is particularly important in a market where technology makes it easier to publish books in multiple formats and keep them in print. Artificial intelligence and new media have a significant role in creating product awareness and influencing purchasing decisions.
By enabling efficient discoverability and converting that interest into a decision to buy, BIC can lead the way with best practice recommendations underpinned by current industry standards. This project will make for a more resilient and business focused book supply chain.
Project schedule
The project will be made up of BIC member volunteers from across the industry and be led by Stephen Long, an independent consultant with over 35 years industry experience. The project is expected to run from September 2025 until March 2026 and will meet regularly online. This will be followed by a period of promotion, endorsement and review.
