SUMMARY:BIC Brunch - European Accessibility Act – Digital Content (ePub and PDF)
DESCRIPTION:A guide to the accessibility requirements of the content of a digital book.\n\n\nBIC Brunches 2024\n#bicbrunch \nEuropean Accessibility Act: Exploring ePub\nOverview\nBIC Brunches are a series of live webinars which have been created for BIC members and non-members to attend to discuss book industry supply chain topics (including issues\, successes\, and challenges). Each BIC Brunch session is dedicated to one key area of the supply chain\, offering attendees a unique opportunity to gather knowledge about that topic from experts in the field. \n \nIntroduction\nJoin us in this\, the third session of our brand-new series of webinars dedicated to Accessibility\, which we’ve put together with the 2025 European Accessibility Act (EAA) firmly in mind. \nThis event follows on from our incredibly well received launch session in July 2024 which took us back to the basics with a look at the legalities. \nIn the second session (September) we explored the EAA requirements in light of what they mean for digital/eBooks both in terms of the data contained within the ePub file and also the metadata created and distributed throughout the book industry supply chain via ONIX. The recordings of both sessions are available exclusively to staff at BIC member organisations only via info@bic.org.uk. \nSo having already looked at the legalities and the metadata\, October’s session sees our expert speakers guide us through the accessibility requirements of the content of a digital book. We will look at ePubs and PDFs\, and take a quick tour of W3C’s User Experience Guide as we look to understand what it means for an ebook to be truly accessible\, what is required by the EAA\, the common pitfalls to avoid\, and what can we be doing better. We will also hear first-hand about the impact of accessible content on readers with accessibility requirements. \nIf you have any specific questions you would like addressed at the webinar\, please send details to info@bic.org.uk. \n \nHost\n\nKarina Urquhart\, Executive Director\, BIC\n\nSpeakers\n\nSimon Mellins\, Independent Digital Publishing Consultant and Accessibility Specialist\, plus co-founder and working group member of the Publisher’s Accessibility Action Group (PAAG)\nPaul Porter\, Technology Officer\, RNIB\nJames Yanchak\, Production Technologies Manager\, Taylor & Francis\n\n \nWho should attend?\nThis event will be of interest to those concerned with complying with the EU Accessibility Act\, particularly when it comes to the creation of content for digital books/ebooks. \nThe EU Accessibility Act will have a far-reaching impact on the book industry supply chain and so this session will be of interest to anyone working in the book publishing world including publishers\, vendors\, and in particular\, content creators. \n \nRegistration\nTickets are FREE for BIC\, BISG and EDItEUR members – non-members are asked to pay a nominal fee.To register\, scroll to the top of this webpage and click on the ‘Get Tickets’ button. Not sure if your organisation is a BIC member? View our members list here. \n \nFuture Accessibility BIC Brunch sessions\nIn addition to October’s session\, there are currently 6 further BIC Brunch sessions planned that will explore specific topics with regards to the EU Accessibility Act and they include: \n\nAlt Text – November 2024\nFixed Layout/PDF – December 2024\nSTEM/Educational/Scholarly Requirements – January 2025\nWebsites/Platforms – February 2025\nDigital Audio – March 2025\nDRM\, Text-to-Speech and Accessibility – April 2025\n\n \nPrevious Accessibility BIC Brunch sessions\nThere are 2 previous BIC Brunch sessions: \n\nBack to Basics – the Legalities (held in July 2024 recording available on request via info@bic.org.uk – exclusively for BIC members only)\nMetadata (held in Sept 2024 recording available on request via info@bic.org.uk – exclusively for BIC members only)\n\n \nCan’t make it?\nIf you would like to attend this event but cannot for any reason\, you can watch our BIC Brunch and Green BIC Brunch sessions via the BIC YouTube channel. One month after the live event\, the footage will be uploaded to the channel. \nAttendees will have access to the recording more quickly: Within a few days of the live event. \nAlso\, if you’re unable to attend this event but have a question for one of our speakers then do get in touch. Either tweet at @BIC1UK using hashtag: #bicbrunch (before or during the event) or contact us at info@bic.org.uk (prior to the event) to have your question put to our speakers. \nIf you would like to remain informed about all of BIC’s forthcoming events\, including our BIC Brunch sessions\, join BIC’s mailing list. \nWe look forward to seeing you!

Each BIC Brunch session is dedicated to one key area of the supply chain\, offering attendees a unique opportunity to gather knowledge about that topic from experts in the field. \n \nIntroduction\nJoin us in this\, the second session of our brand-new series of webinars dedicated to Accessibility\, which we’ve put together with the 2025 European Accessibility Act (EAA) firmly in mind. This follows on from our incredibly well received launch session in July 2024 which took us back to the basics with a look at the legalities. The recording of July’s session is available exclusively to staff at BIC member organisations only via info@bic.org.uk \nIn this second session we’ll be exploring the EAA requirements in light of what they mean for digital/eBooks both in terms the data contained within the ePub file and also the metadata created and distributed throughout the book industry supply chain via ONIX. \nOur expert speakers will guide us through metadata workflows\, ePub schema metadata\, and give us a quick tour of the W3C User Experience Guide for Displaying Accessibility Metadata. \nWe’ll hear helpful hints and tips on how to approach your frontlist\, how to identify\, and update backlist metadata\, the practicalities of the process of doing this\, and the importance of communications and setting expectations with all supply chain actors/trading partners. \nWe will be hosting separate sessions dedicated to i) the requirements for displaying accessibility information on vendor platforms\, and ii) a deeper dive into the accessibility requirements when it comes to the content of ePub files\, PDF’s etc. September’s session is all about the metadata. \nSo\, if you’re looking for advice from industry experts on how to tackle the EAA in terms of metadata requirements\, join us on 5th September for the second session of our BIC Brunch: Accessibility series. \nIf you have any specific questions you would like addressed at the webinar please send details to info@bic.org.uk. \nHost\n\nKarina Urquhart\, Executive Director\, BIC\n\n\nSpeakers\n\nJohn Bell\, Publishing Systems Manager\, HarperCollins\, UK\nWendy Reid\, Accessibility and Publishing Standards Lead at Rakuten Kobo Inc.\nChris Saynor\, Standards Editor\, EDItEUR\n\n \nWho should attend?\nThis event will be of interest to those concerend with complying with the EU Accessiblity Act\, particulraly when it comes to the creation\, updating\, sending and receiveing of the metadata for digital books/ebooks. \nThe EU Accessibitly Act will have a far reaching impact on the book industry supply chain and so this session will be of interest to anyone working in the book publishing world including publishers\, vendors\, content creators\, and in particluar metadata specialists and system providers. \n \nRegistration\nTickets are FREE for BIC members – non-members are asked to pay a nominal fee.To register\, scroll to the top of this webpage and click on the ‘Get Tickets’ button. Not sure if your organisation is a BIC member? We’ll also be learning what organisations based outside to the EU need to do if they’re selling into Europe\, if the act applies to printed books\, what to do about titles published before 28th June 2025 but sold after 28th June 2025\, and there’ll be an opportunity to understand more about the disproportionate burden extension and much\, much more. \nFind out what the EAA means for your organisation by joining us on 11th July 2024. \nPlease note that while this session explores the legalities of the EAA\, it is not intended as and should not be considered as legal advice by any individual or organisation that is attending the event.
