This course explains its origins\, development\, uptake\, benefits & more\n\n\nBIC Thema: Essentials half-day training course (online)\n#bictraining \n \nPurpose of the Course\nThis course provides an introduction to Thema – the international subject classification scheme for the global book trade – explaining the need for such a scheme; its origins\, development and uptake; its benefits across the trade; and the principles of implementing Thema in systems and product records. \nAfter examining the key differences (and similarities) between Thema and the legacy schemes it is designed to replace\, the course will provide delegates with the opportunity to experiment and have hands-on experience with applying correct Thema codes. \n \nBenefits of Attending\nAs part of BIC’s suite of metadata training courses\, this course will provide an introduction to the Thema subject classification scheme in the context of wider metadata best practice. Whatever your background\, whether from an editorial\, marketing or systems perspective\, this course is relevant to individuals from all professional disciplines within the trade. Some familiarity with bibliographic subject classification (e.g. use of schemes such as BISAC or Thema) is assumed\, but not considered essential. \n \nCourse Outline\nPrior to the course\, delegates will be contacted to enquire whether they have any specific areas of concern / interest. Although the course can be tailored to its attendees to a certain degree\, the overall content is as follows: \n\nAn Introduction to Thema including its origins\, benefits\, development and adoption\nThema implementation\nContext\, i.e. how Thema codes are used globally\nHands-on\, practical sessions in assigning Thema codes\n\nRead the full course outline here. \nThe Trainers\n\n\n\nGraham Bell \nExecutive Director \nEDItEUR \n  \nGraham is Executive Director of EDItEUR\, and is responsible for the overall development of EDItEUR’s standards and the management services it provides on behalf of other standards organisations (ISNI International Agency and the International DOI Foundation). SUMMARY:BIC Brunch: European Accessibility Act - Websites/Platforms & Packaging
DESCRIPTION:Expert speakers reveal considerations & requirements for websites/platforms in light of the EAA with considerations for accessible packaging\n\n\nBIC Brunches 2025\n#bicbrunch\nEuropean Accessibility Act: Websites/Platforms and Accessible Packaging\n \nIntroduction\nJoin us in this\, the 7th session of our series of webinars dedicated to Accessibility\, which we have put together with the 2025 European Accessibility Act (EAA) firmly in mind. \nThis event follows on from 6 incredibly well received sessions that have already examined i) Back to Basics – the Legalities\, ii) Accessibility Metadata\, iii) Accessible Content (EPUB and PDF)\, iv) Alt Text\, v) Fixed Layout and vi) STEM/Scholarly Publishing \nRecordings of each of the above sessions (with the exception of the Legalities session)will gradually be made freely available via our YouTube Accessibility Playlist. Prior to them being published on YouTube\, BIC members may request an advanced copy of any of the recordings from the above 6 sessions via info@bic.org.uk at any time. \nFebruary’s session sees our expert speakers guide us through the accessibility requirements for websites/platforms and accessible packaging. We’ll do this by covering a variety of topics concerned with the accessible experience of exploring and shopping online: from browsing\, to receiving digital books to chosen devices and being able to access them confidently in a preferred reading method; or receiving a hard copy (braille\, large print\, audio) through the post. We’ll also hear about the Accessible Product Packaging project. \n \nHost\n\nKarina Urquhart\, Executive Director\, BIC\n\nSpeakers\n\nSydney Allen\, Product Manager\, GlassBoxx\nVirginie Bouilhac\, Director\, Content Management\, Rakuten Kobo Inc\nRobin Spinks\, Head of Inclusive Design\, RNIB\n\n \nWho should attend?\nThe EU Accessibility Act will have a far-reaching impact on the book industry supply chain\, including the consideration and development/maintenance of websites/platforms. Today\, most organisations have websites/online platforms and so this session will be of interest to a broad range of different book industry organisation types and professionals\, especially website/platform developers\, website/platform designers\, content creators and those working at publishing houses\, vendors\, 3rd party suppliers etc. It will also be of interest to those organisations that supply content/products directly to customers (B2C). \n \nRegistration\nTickets are FREE for BIC and BISG members and MA Publishing Students at City St George’s\, University of London. Everyone else is required to pay a nominal fee. Please ensure you select the correct ticket type. \nTo register\, scroll to the top of this webpage and click on the ‘Get Tickets’ button. Not sure if your organisation is a BIC member? View our members list here. \n \nFuture Accessibility BIC Brunch sessions\nIn addition to February’s session\, there are currently 2 further BIC Brunch sessions planned (with possibly more to come) that will explore specific topics with regards to the EU Accessibility Act and they include: \n\nDigital Audio – March 2025\nDRM\, Text-to-Speech\, and Accessibility – April 2025\n\n\nCan’t make it? Watch it on YouTube\nIf you would like to attend this event but cannot for any reason\, you can watch both our BIC Brunch and Green BIC Brunch sessions via the BIC YouTube channel. One month after the live event\, the footage will be uploaded to the channel. Attendees of this event will automatically receive a copy of the recording within one week of the live session. \nIf you would like to remain informed about all of BIC’s forthcoming events\, including our BIC Brunch sessions\, join BIC’s mailing list. \nWe look forward to seeing you!
