SUMMARY:Green BIC Brunch: The Carbon Footprint of Print and Digital Products
DESCRIPTION:Opportunity for book industry organisations to understand how to start to measure carbon footprint.\n\n\nGreen BIC Brunches 2024\n#greenbicbrunch \nThe November 2024 Green Brunch Session\nThe Carbon Footprint of Print and Digital Products\n \nIntroduction\nThe Green BIC Brunch series has been incredibly well received since its launch in June 2020. We have covered myriad topics across the full breadth of the physical book supply chain; paper\, laminates\, shipping\, glues\, single use plastics\, the environmental impact of distribution and freight\, waste reduction\, printing technologies\, inks foils…the list goes on. \nWe are delighted to bring you the next instalment of our hugely popular Green BIC Brunch series\, which this time has the spotlight firmly on the carbon footprint of print and digital products. \nDo you know the carbon footprint of your physical and e-books? Do you know how to measure them both? Are digital products better for the environment in terms of carbon footprint? Or is this a misconception? \nAn organisation’s sustainability strategy is likely to include the measurement of its Scopes 1\, 2 and 3. Yet\, gathering and reporting on these measurements can prove to be challenging regardless of whether efforts are focused at an organisational or a product level. \nFor a long time\, it has often been thought that digital products have a very small carbon footprint but now research is providing more information in this area. \nThis Green BIC Brunch will explore recent research work on the sustainability of digital products\, that has been conducted by two organisations\, Cambridge University Press and Assessment and 2K Denmark\, with different methodologies and results. Attendees will also hear from Penguin Random House who have only just started their digital sustainability journey. This is an ideal opportunity for all organisations\, in the book industry supply chain\, to understand how they might also start to measure both the physical and digital carbon footprints of their products. \n \nWho should attend?\nThis Green BIC Brunch will be of benefit to those that work in the book industry with an interest in sustainability. \n \nYour Host\nKarina Urquhart\, Executive Director\, BIC \n \nThe Speakers\n\nÉmilie Hames\, Sustainability & Compliance Manager\, Penguin Random House\nAndri Johnston\, Digital Sustainability Lead\, Cambridge University Press and Assessment\nAndreas Stobberup\, Project Leader\, 2K Denmark\n\nRead more about the host and speakers here. \n \nCan’t attend on the day?\nIf you would like to attend this event but cannot for any reason\, you can watch our BIC Brunch\, Green BIC Brunch and/or BIC Breakfast sessions via the BIC YouTube channel. Following the event\, the footage will be uploaded to the channel and a link will be provided on the BIC website. \nAlso\, if you are not able to attend this event but have a question for one of our speakers then do get in touch. Either tweet at @BIC1UK using hashtag: #bicbrunch (before or during the event) or contact us at info@bic.org.uk (prior to the event) to have your question put to our speakers. \nIf you’d like to remain informed about all of BIC’s forthcoming events\, including our monthly BIC Brunch / Breakfast sessions\, join the BIC mailing list. \n \nRegistration\nTickets are FREE for BIC members. Non-members will need to pay a small fee. \nTo register\, scroll to the top of this webpage and click on the ‘Get tickets’ button. \n \nAbout our Green BIC Brunch Series\nBIC is the dedicated book industry supply chain organisation in the UK and as such\, the environment is naturally high on our priorities for 2023 and beyond. In June 2020\, to uphold the BIC Green Promise\, we launched our Green BIC Brunch series which aims specifically to explore key areas of the book supply chain that can and do impact on our planet’s environmental health. Each Green BIC Brunch is dedicated to one key area while the series as a whole is intended to join the book industry supply chain together in one place – exploring and inspiring change in response to environmental challenges. \nOur past Green BIC Brunch sessions can be watched online via the BIC YouTube channel.
